Can carpet warm a room?
While it doesn't heat the room, carpeting has a high thermal value, which means it has an insulating effect higher than some floorings, such as concrete. A high R-value also saves on energy costs because if the room is already warm, the rug holds on to it. Psychologically, a rug evokes thoughts of coziness, warmth, and comfort.
What is thermal value?
R-value is just a term used to define a carpet’s thermal resistance, and it’s often displayed on the rug’s label. Determined not so much by material as by thickness, the higher the R-value, the more insulating power of the rug. If you don’t see it displayed, talk to your flooring expert.
Don't forget about the padding
Some say padding has as much R-value, if not more, than the carpet itself, so when you put the two together, you’ll have complete insulation with superior protection from heat and cool air loss. A carpet and padding combination can sometimes have an R-value as high as over 2.0.
Padding comes in all materials. Urethane padding has the highest R-value and is best for low traffic rooms, like the bedroom, because it has a low density, making it lightweight and unable to withstand heavy traffic.
Fiber padding is dense and ideal for high traffic, with an R-value that provides good warming and cooling properties. Please note: It's essential to get the proper padding for your carpet.
